Megève sits on a high, open saddle in Haute-Savoie, and its map has a softer shape than most Alpine resorts. At the centre is a small medieval core of narrow lanes around the church and square, partly pedestrianised. Around it, roads wander out across the pastures to chalets and hamlets, climbing gently toward the ski areas on all sides.
Megève was developed as a ski resort in the 1920s at the initiative of Baroness Noémie de Rothschild, who wanted a French alternative to St. Moritz. The Rothschild family built on the slopes of Mont d'Arbois, and the resort became known for its chalet architecture and the horse-drawn sleighs that still move through the village streets.

Rising east of the village, this slope is where the Rothschilds developed the resort, and its lifts lead on toward the neighbouring ski area of Saint-Gervais.

Beyond the centre, narrow roads spread out in every direction across pastures and woodland, linking outlying hamlets and chalets in a loose, irregular web.
