Meissen follows the Elbe through a narrow stretch of the Saxon valley northwest of Dresden. From above, the river is the defining line, broad and gently curving, with bridges tying the two banks together. On the left bank, the castle hill rises above the old town, and the small river Triebisch joins the Elbe after cutting its own valley through the town.
The hilltop holds the Albrechtsburg and Meissen Cathedral, one of the oldest castle and church ensembles in Germany. Below them, the old town is a knot of steep lanes and squares. Meissen is also known worldwide for its porcelain: the first European hard-paste porcelain manufactory was founded here in 1710, and it still operates today.
A Meissen map poster draws the contrast between the compact medieval centre and the open sweep of the Elbe. Vineyard slopes, railway lines and newer districts spread along both banks, while the old town stays tight and irregular. In black and white the valley shape reads very clearly, with the river as a single pale ribbon.
