Melgaço is a municipality in the Marajó region of Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon, and its map is written in water. The town sits on the bank of a broad waterway, with a short stretch of streets running along the shore. Behind it, the forest closes in quickly, crossed by rivers, channels and inlets that serve as the main routes through the area.
The municipality covers a large area, much of it forest. It includes part of the Caxiuanã National Forest, a protected area used for long-term scientific research. On a map, this means a wide field of green threaded with winding rivers and very few roads.
A Melgaço map poster is unusual for a city print. The waterfront settlement is a small, precise cluster, while the rivers around it draw long, looping lines across the sheet. It is a portrait of a place where boats matter more than streets, rendered with the restraint of a minimalist line map.
