Menderes is a district of İzmir Province, lying south of the city across a fertile plain. Its main town, formerly known as Cumaovası, has a practical layout of streets set among farmland, orchards and newer housing. The district reaches west and south to the Aegean coast, where the landscape turns to hills and small bays.
The district has deep roots. On its coast lie the remains of ancient Notion, and inland is Claros, once the site of a famous oracle of Apollo. The town is also close to İzmir's main airport, which sits on the plain to the north, and major roads link it quickly with the city.
A Menderes map poster shows the town in its wider setting: the grid of the centre, roads fanning out across the plain, and the coastline further off. In black and white it becomes a study in contrasts between flat farmland, busy routes to İzmir, and the more irregular shapes of the hills toward the sea.
