Messias is a small municipality in Alagoas, a short distance inland from Maceió. Its map is compact: a modest centre where a few principal streets meet, residential blocks extending along the approaches, and then open country. The land around it rises and falls gently, and much of it is given to agriculture, particularly sugar cane, which has shaped this part of the state.
Towns in this part of Alagoas grew with the sugar economy, and the landscape still reflects it: large cultivated plots, farm tracks and small waterways dividing the land between settlements.
