Miandrarivo is in Vakinankaratra, in Madagascar's central highlands. The land here rises and falls in rounded ridges, and the valleys between them are farmed as rice paddies. On a map, roads bend to follow the contours. The town appears where several of these routes meet, as a small, dense grid of streets.
Relief is the main theme from above. Streams collect in the valley floors, and field boundaries and paths line the slopes. Settlements sit on higher, drier ground. The overall effect is a fine, irregular mesh of lines. It is very different from the long, straight roads of flatter country.
