Michelstadt lies in the Mümling valley, in the Odenwald hills of southern Hesse. It is best known for its half-timbered town hall from 1484, which stands on stilts over an open ground floor in the market square. It is one of the most photographed buildings in Germany. Around it, the old town keeps its tight, irregular street plan, with many timber-framed houses still standing.

The Mümling and the railway run through the valley on a north–south line, and newer districts extend along them. Wooded slopes rise on both sides, so the built-up area stays long and narrow.
