Middleton lies immediately west of Madison, at the western end of Lake Mendota. The map shows a compact downtown of short blocks, residential neighbourhoods of curving streets spreading west and north, and the U.S. Highway 12 beltline running as a firm line through the eastern side of the city.
Much of Middleton's character comes from the open land within its limits. Pheasant Branch Conservancy follows a creek and marsh from the city toward the lake, and a hill there offers views over the area. The city is also home to the National Mustard Museum, an unusual and well-loved attraction in its downtown.
