Midlothian lies in Chesterfield County, west of Richmond, and its map is shaped by twentieth and twenty-first century suburban development. Its main artery is Midlothian Turnpike, US Route 60, running east to west. From it, curving roads lead into subdivisions filled with loops and cul-de-sacs, interrupted by woodland and lakes.
The area's history runs much deeper. The Midlothian coal mines are often cited as the site of the first commercially mined coal in the United States, in the eighteenth century. The old turnpike was built partly to carry that coal to Richmond, and the village core still sits along that route.
Today, reservoirs, parks and wooded stream valleys break up the residential streets. A Midlothian map poster shows a pattern very different from a traditional grid, with organic curves and loops that make a surprisingly graphic image.
