Mina Map Poster
Mina lies in a narrow valley a few kilometres east of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, between rocky hills. From above, it is unlike almost any other place. The valley floor is covered by a vast, regular grid of permanent tents. Straight paths, access roads and service lanes divide the tents into large rectangular camps, and the hills around them are left bare and irregular.
For most of the year Mina stands nearly empty. During the Hajj, it houses millions of pilgrims, who stay here on several days of the pilgrimage. The tents are made of fireproof materials and arranged by region and group, which gives the map its precise, orderly texture.
At the western end of the valley, the Jamarat Bridge, a multi-level structure, carries pilgrims to the three stone pillars for the ritual stoning of the devil. Pedestrian tunnels and roads link Mina to Mecca and to Arafat further east. A Mina map poster shows a landscape shaped entirely by the logistics of pilgrimage, set within a narrow desert valley.
