Minas lies in the province of Camagüey in central-eastern Cuba, north-east of the provincial capital. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets on flat land, with a main square at its centre and the railway line running alongside. Around it the countryside opens into wide pastures and fields, crossed by long straight roads and a few small streams.
The town is known throughout Cuba for its musical instrument factory, which has made guitars, tres, laúdes and other traditional instruments for decades. Camagüey is the country's great cattle province, and the broad, flat landscape around Minas reflects that ranching history.
