Miskolc lies in north-eastern Hungary, where the wooded Bükk hills meet the flatter land of the Sajó valley. The map shows a city stretched out in a long east–west band, following the valley of the Szinva stream from the old centre toward the western districts. Industrial areas, residential estates and green hills alternate along this line, giving the city an elongated, layered shape.
Hungary's third-largest city for much of the twentieth century, Miskolc was a major centre of heavy industry, particularly steel. Its western part includes Diósgyőr Castle, a restored medieval fortress, and beyond it Lillafüred, a resort in the hills. In the south lies Miskolctapolca, known for its unusual cave bath, where warm water flows through natural rock passages.
