Modesto sits in California's Central Valley, where irrigated farmland spreads flat to the horizon. The downtown grid was laid out parallel to the railroad, so it runs at an angle, while the newer neighbourhoods around it follow the north-south survey lines of the surrounding land. On a map, the two grids meet in visible seams.
The Tuolumne River winds along the city's southern edge, its looping course and green banks softening the otherwise geometric pattern. Dry Creek cuts across the north side, and orchards and fields surround the city beyond the last suburban blocks.
Downtown's arch carries the motto Water, Wealth, Contentment, Health, a reminder of how irrigation built the region. Modesto is also the hometown of George Lucas, whose film American Graffiti drew on the local cruising culture of his youth. A Modesto map poster shows the valley city behind both stories.
