Mondovì, in the province of Cuneo, is really two towns stacked on each other. The historic upper quarter, Piazza, sits on a hilltop with a view toward the Alps. Below it, Breo and the other lower districts spread along the Ellero river. Winding roads and a funicular railway connect the two levels.
The upper town holds the cathedral of San Donato, a sloping main square and the Belvedere tower with its garden. The area also has a long tradition of ceramics. In 1796 a young Napoleon won a battle here during his first Italian campaign, and the town appears in histories of that campaign.
A Mondovì map poster shows the town's vertical split in flat line. The hilltop quarter is small and dense, and the switchback roads around it curl like contour lines. The lower town opens out along the river. It suits anyone who knows the climb from Breo to Piazza.
