Monte Alegre is a municipality in Rio Grande do Norte, in northeastern Brazil, inland from the state capital, Natal. It lies in the agreste, the transitional belt between the humid coast and the drier sertão. From above, the town forms a compact grid of streets, with roads leading out through farmland and gently rolling country.
The town has an agricultural economy and a close relationship with the wider Natal region, with many residents connected to the capital through work and family. Its name, meaning cheerful hill, is shared with several other towns in Brazil.
