Monte Alegre stands near the northern bank of the lower Amazon in the state of Pará, where the river spreads into a wide landscape of channels, floodplain lakes and seasonal wetlands. The town is built on two levels: an upper city on higher ground, with a more regular pattern of streets, and a lower city along the waterfront, where the port and river traffic are concentrated.
The area is known well beyond Brazil for its archaeological sites. In the hills near the town, rock shelters such as Caverna da Pedra Pintada hold paintings and evidence of human occupation dating back more than eleven thousand years, among the oldest known in the Americas. Much of this landscape is now protected as the Monte Alegre State Park.
