Moonak sits in the Sangrur district of Punjab, close to the Haryana border, on the level farmland of the Malwa region. From above, the town reads as a dense core of short, irregular lanes surrounded by a much larger geometry of rectangular fields, the kind of patchwork that defines this part of the state. Roads leave the centre in several directions, linking it to neighbouring villages and market towns.
The Ghaggar river flows through this stretch of country, and it is the landscape's most important line. Seasonal and at times unpredictable, it has shaped how the land around Moonak is farmed and embanked. On a monochrome print the river and its embankments become a soft, winding stroke against the straight edges of fields and roads, a contrast that gives the composition its sense of movement.
