Moularès, also known as Oum El Araies, is in the Gafsa Governorate of southwestern Tunisia, near the border with Algeria. It is one of the towns of the Gafsa mining basin, where phosphate has been extracted for more than a century, and the town grew up around that industry.
On a map, Moularès is a compact grid set in dry, open country. Roads and rail links lead out toward the mines and the processing sites. Beyond the town, the land is marked by bare ridges and dry riverbeds, with the large, pale shapes of mining areas scattered across it.
