Mount Barker lies in the Adelaide Hills, east of Adelaide along the South Eastern Freeway. It takes its name from the nearby summit, a low but distinctive hill that rises above the surrounding farmland. The town began as a rural centre and has grown quickly in recent decades as one of the region's main residential areas.
That growth shows on the map. An older core around the main street and Mount Barker Creek is surrounded by newer estates, whose curving streets and cul-de-sacs spread over the rolling hills. The freeway runs along the edge of town, and green corridors and reserves follow the creek lines between neighbourhoods.
