From above, Mpondwe gathers around the road that runs to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The streets are dense near the crossing, where trade and transport concentrate, and they thin out quickly into farmland and scattered homes. The frontier itself gives the map a hard edge on one side, while the land to the north rises toward the mountains.
Mpondwe is in Kasese District in western Uganda and is one of the main crossing points between Uganda and the Congo, with the town of Kasindi on the other side. It lies very close to the equator, south of the Rwenzori Mountains. Queen Elizabeth National Park is not far away, so the wider area mixes border trade with protected land.
