Mrągowo lies in the Masurian Lake District of northeastern Poland, a landscape of glacial lakes, forests and rolling hills. The town is built between lakes, most notably Lake Czos, which runs along its edge, and Lake Juno to the north. On the map, the old centre sits on higher ground by the water, with newer districts spreading around the shorelines.
Before 1945 the town was known by its German name, Sensburg, and it was part of East Prussia. Today it is a holiday base for the lake district and is widely known in Poland for its country music festival, which has been held here for decades in an amphitheatre by the lake.
