Mugala lies in the southern part of Xinjiang, China, in the belt of oases that runs between the Kunlun Mountains and the Taklamakan Desert. Here, water from the mountains feeds rivers that fade into the sand further north, and settlements grow where that water can be used for irrigation. On a map, the town appears as a network of lanes and fields surrounded by open desert.
The oasis landscape has a characteristic look. Poplar-lined roads, irrigation channels and small fields form a fine, regular pattern within the cultivated area, and its edge against the desert is sharp. Outside it, the map is almost empty, which gives the settlement a clear and self-contained shape.
