Muğla is the capital of Muğla province in south-western Turkey, a region better known for coastal resorts such as Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye. The city itself lies inland, on a plateau surrounded by pine-covered mountains. As a provincial and university town, it has a quieter, more traditional character than the coast.
From above, Muğla divides clearly into the old quarter and the newer city. The historic neighbourhoods climb the lower slopes of a hill on the northern side, with narrow, winding lanes and whitewashed Ottoman houses known for their tall chimneys and wooden gates. Below them, a more regular street pattern spreads across the plain.
The campus of Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University adds a large open area at the edge of the city and brings in a young population.
