Murbād lies in the Thane district of Maharashtra, inland from the Mumbai metropolitan region and on the approach to the Western Ghats. On the map the town is a compact cluster of streets along a main road, with residential lanes branching off on both sides and quickly giving way to fields and open land.
To the east the terrain begins to rise toward the Sahyadri range, and the road through Murbād continues toward the Malshej Ghat, a mountain pass known for its monsoon waterfalls and misty views. Rivers and streams cross the surrounding countryside, adding thin winding lines to an otherwise loosely drawn landscape.
