Muscatine sits on the Mississippi in eastern Iowa, where the river swings around a wide bend and briefly flows west. The downtown grid starts near the riverfront and climbs toward the bluffs, and newer neighbourhoods spread across the upland behind them. To the south, the flat bottomland known locally as Muscatine Island is covered in fields.
The town was once known as the Pearl Button Capital of the World, when factories cut buttons from freshwater mussel shells taken from the river. Mark Twain lived here briefly and later wrote about its summer sunsets. The area is also known for its melons, grown in the sandy soil near the river.
