Mutuáli lies in the interior of Nampula province in northern Mozambique, in a landscape of open savanna, farmland and scattered granite hills. The town is small and follows its transport routes. Houses and plots line the main road and the railway, and a looser pattern of paths extends into the surrounding fields.
The railway that passes through the area is part of the corridor linking the port of Nacala on the coast with the interior and Malawi. On the map it appears as a long, steady line. A Mutuáli map poster shows how the town grew along that line, with lanes branching off from it.
