Mỹ Tho sits on the northern bank of the Tiền River, one of the main branches of the Mekong. From above, the wide brown river dominates the map. The city is spread along its bank, and several large, green river islands lie just offshore. A canal runs into the city from the river, dividing the centre and linking the river to the surrounding delta.
It has long been one of the gateways to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City and a well-known departure point for boat trips to the islands and orchards across the water. The town centre is compact, with a market and a river promenade near the canal mouth, and the grid becomes looser as it spreads inland.
