Nagaon lies on the flat plains of central Assam, on the banks of the Kolong River, a channel of the Brahmaputra system that loops slowly through the district. From above the town follows the river's curves, with the older centre close to the water and newer neighbourhoods spreading out across the level land. Beyond the edges the map dissolves into paddy fields, ponds and village roads.
Nagaon is an important commercial and administrative centre for central Assam, on the main road east toward Upper Assam. The district includes Batadrava, the birthplace of the Vaishnavite saint and reformer Srimanta Sankardeva. Part of Kaziranga National Park, home of the greater one-horned rhinoceros, also lies within the wider district.
