Nahrīn lies in Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan, in a valley at the edge of the Hindu Kush foothills. From above, the town appears as a cluster of streets and compounds along the valley floor, surrounded by a patchwork of irrigated fields. Tree lines and water channels follow the gentle slope, while the hills rise more sharply beyond the cultivated land.
The area is agricultural, depending on streams from the mountains to water its fields and orchards. In March 2002 a strong earthquake centred near Nahrīn caused heavy damage to the town and surrounding villages, and much of the district was rebuilt in the years that followed.
A Nahrīn map poster shows the close link between water and settlement. The pattern of fields and channels spreads across the valley in fine lines, while the town itself forms a denser core at its centre. It is an image of the rural north of Afghanistan, where the shape of each village is written by rivers and the hills around them.
