Nanfeng is a town in the far west of Guangdong Province, in hilly country not far from the border with Guangxi. From above it reads as a compact settlement in a valley, with a denser core of streets surrounded by farmland and wooded slopes. Terrain shapes the map more than planning does, because roads and buildings follow the flatter land between the hills.
Water plays a quiet part in the composition. Streams and small rivers wind across the valley floors, and fields and ponds make a patchwork of irregular shapes around the town. Main roads connect Nanfeng to neighbouring towns and the wider region. Smaller lanes branch off towards villages spread along the valleys.
