Naranjos lies in northern Veracruz, in the Huasteca region, the warm and green country between the Sierra Madre Oriental and the Gulf of Mexico. Its name means orange trees, which suits a part of Veracruz known for citrus. The town is the seat of the municipality of Naranjos Amatlán.
On the map, the centre is a fairly regular grid of blocks that softens at the edges. There, streets curve over low hills and thin out into rural roads. Streams cross the surrounding farmland, and the regional highway draws a longer, straighter line past the town, linking it to its neighbours in the Huasteca.
