Narsimhapur is the headquarters of its district in central Madhya Pradesh. It lies in the broad, fertile valley of the Narmada, one of India's most revered rivers. On a map the town appears as a compact knot of streets and neighbourhoods. The railway cuts across it in a firm straight line, and farm roads fan out into the level countryside.
The town is named after a temple dedicated to Narasimha, the man-lion form of Vishnu, and that temple is still a focus for the older part of town. The surrounding district is known for its agriculture, particularly sugarcane and pulses grown in the valley's deep soils. To the south, the land begins to rise toward the hills of the Satpura range.
