Nauen is a small town in Brandenburg's Havelland district, about forty kilometres west of Berlin. Its medieval core is easy to recognise on a map as a compact oval of streets around the church of St. Jacobi. The line of the former town walls can still be traced in the curve of the surrounding roads.
North and west of the town lies the Havelländisches Luch, a broad, low fenland drained over centuries by straight ditches and canals. On the map these channels form a fine, precise pattern of parallel lines. The Berlin–Hamburg railway passes Nauen and runs straight across this flat terrain.
Nauen is best known for its transmitter station, which began operating in 1906 and is regarded as the oldest continuously operating radio transmitting site in the world. Drainage ditches criss-cross the flat Luch in long straight lines. They produce a fine, almost engineered texture across the countryside north of the town.
Transmitter station
The radio station outside town has operated since 1906. Its grounds sit in open land and are a reminder of Nauen's unusual place in the history of broadcasting.
