Nazaré da Mata is in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, the band of low green hills inland from the Atlantic coast of northeastern Brazil. The town sits northwest of Recife, and on a map it appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by farmland, with country roads branching out toward neighbouring towns and the plantations beyond.
The region has been shaped for centuries by sugarcane, and cane fields still dominate the landscape around the town. Nazaré da Mata is closely linked to maracatu rural, a carnival tradition of the Pernambuco interior known for its costumed performers and drumming, and the town is often described as one of its centres.
