Neftçala Map Poster & Print
Neftçala stands in southeastern Azerbaijan on the flat coastal lowland where the Kura, the longest river of the South Caucasus, approaches the Caspian Sea. The landscape is almost entirely level, and water defines the map: the river channel, the divided land of the delta, the shoreline and shallow wetlands, and the town's streets laid out on the dry ground between them.
The name refers to oil, and the town grew in the twentieth century around resource industries, including oil extraction and a plant producing iodine and bromine from underground brines. The street plan is largely regular, with orderly blocks and straight roads rather than the tangled lanes found in older towns of the region.
