Neira lies in the Caldas department of Colombia, north of Manizales, high in the Andes. The town occupies a narrow ridge, and its streets follow a grid that has been adapted to the steep terrain. On the map, the centre appears as a compact block of streets, with roads twisting down the slopes into the surrounding valleys.
The area belongs to Colombia's coffee-growing region, and the hillsides around Neira are covered with farms, forest patches and small streams. It is one of the older towns of the Caldas region, founded during the nineteenth-century Antioquian settlement of the central Andes.
