Neópolis sits in the state of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil, on the right bank of the São Francisco river not far from where it reaches the Atlantic. The river dominates the map: a wide, calm expanse of water with sandbanks and islands, and on the far side the historic town of Penedo in Alagoas.
The town's streets run along the waterfront and climb gently inland, forming a compact grid with the riverbank as its main edge. The crossing to Penedo, long made by boat and ferry, links the two towns, and the relationship between them across the water is one of the defining features of the place.
Beyond the town, farmland and wetlands spread along the river plain. A Neópolis map poster frames the town against the broad curve of the São Francisco, giving the composition a strong horizontal line of water and a clear sense of place on one of Brazil's great rivers.
