Newbury grew up where the old road from London to Bath crossed the River Kennet. That crossing still shapes the town when you see it from above. The Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal run east to west through the centre, sometimes side by side and sometimes as one channel. The market-town streets gather at the point where they cross.
To the south-east, the long oval of Newbury Racecourse sits between the railway and the edge of the town. Beyond it is the open ground of Greenham Common, a former airbase that has since been returned to heathland. On the western side, the A34 bypass curves around the town in a wide arc and separates it from the countryside toward Donnington.
A Newbury map poster shows a town with several layers: a waterway older than the railway, a railway older than the bypass, and a large area of common land that looks almost empty on the map. Each layer has its own kind of line, and together they make a well-balanced print.

Newbury Racecourse draws a large clean loop south-east of the centre, set against the railway. It is one of the most recognisable shapes in the whole composition.
Greenham Common
The former airbase east of town is now open common land. Its runway area appears as a wide, quiet space, a contrast with the dense streets further west.
