Ngoro lies in Jombang Regency in East Java, on the fertile plains of the Brantas river basin. Like many Javanese towns, it is less a compact city than a string of neighbourhoods and villages connected by roads. From above, houses line the main routes, while rice paddies, sugarcane fields and canals fill the land between them.
Irrigation is central to the region's agriculture. On a map, canals and field channels appear as straight or gently curving lines that divide the landscape into a regular patchwork. Small mosques, markets and schools mark the busier junctions, where the street network briefly becomes denser.
