Ngozi is the main town of its province in northern Burundi, on the high, hilly plateau that covers much of the country. The terrain decides the layout. Roads mostly follow ridges and contours instead of forming a grid, so the town has a flowing, organic outline that spreads along the high ground.
The region has long been one of Burundi's main coffee-growing areas. The town is also a regional centre for education and administration and has a university that bears its name. Beyond the built-up area, the map gradually turns into a network of rural paths linking hillside homesteads.
