Nilanga is a town in Latur district, in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra, not far from the border with Karnataka. It lies on the broad, open Deccan plateau, a landscape of black-soil farmland, seasonal streams and long straight roads between towns. The map reflects that setting in its simple, spacious lines.
The older part of town is a dense cluster of narrow streets, with markets and temples close together. Around it, newer neighbourhoods spread out in more regular blocks along the main roads, and beyond them the streets quickly give way to fields. It is a working town that serves the farming villages around it.
