Nilópolis Map Poster
Nilópolis is in the Baixada Fluminense, the northern suburban belt of greater Rio de Janeiro. By area it is among the smallest municipalities in Brazil, and its streets are packed very tightly. On a map it looks almost solid: a compact patch of small blocks with hardly any open land, surrounded by neighbouring suburbs.
A suburban railway line cuts straight through the town and divides it into two halves, with the station at the centre. The town is best known for the samba school Beija-Flor de Nilópolis. It is one of the most successful schools in the Rio Carnival, and it carries the town's name to the Sambadrome every year.
