Ningyang is a county in Shandong province, administered from the city of Tai'an, which lies to its north. The land here is part of the North China Plain, flat and largely farmed. On a map, the county town is a clearly bounded block of streets surrounded by fields and scattered villages.
The street plan in the town is mostly regular, with wide main roads crossing at right angles and newer districts added along the edges. Beyond the town, straight rural roads and field boundaries continue across the plain. Ningyang is known across China for its crickets, which have been bred and traded here for the traditional sport of cricket fighting.
