Nkoteng is a town in Cameroon's Centre Region, north-east of Yaoundé, in the savanna-and-forest country drained by the Sanaga River. The town is closely tied to sugar. The plantations of the Cameroon sugar company, SOSUCAM, spread across the land around Nkoteng and neighbouring Mbandjock, and the industry has shaped where people live and work. On a map, that economy is written into the ground itself.
From above, the town is a compact knot of streets beside the main road, with residential lanes filling the blocks in an irregular pattern. Around it, the scale changes. Plantation tracks run in long straight lines and divide the land into large geometric parcels that look nothing like the organic town centre. The contrast between these two patterns is what makes the drawing distinctive.
