Northallerton is the county town of North Yorkshire, set in the flat farmland of the Vale of Mowbray between the Pennines and the North York Moors. Its layout is simple and memorable. A single long, broad High Street runs roughly north to south through the centre, and much of the older town is arranged along it in narrow plots and yards.
From above, the High Street appears as a wide band with side streets and alleys leading off to either side, while newer housing estates spread out to the east and west. The East Coast Main Line runs along the western edge of the town, adding a strong straight line to the composition. A Northallerton map poster shows that clear linear structure at a glance.
The town has hosted a market for centuries, and market days still bring stalls to the High Street. Just north of Northallerton lies the site of the Battle of the Standard, fought in 1138 between English and Scottish forces. Today the town is the administrative centre for North Yorkshire and a stop on the main railway between London and Edinburgh.
