Norwich grew within a bend of the River Wensum, and on a map its medieval centre is a web of narrow lanes and irregular streets. The line of the old city walls can still be traced in the arc of roads around it. For much of the Middle Ages, Norwich was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in England.
Two landmarks anchor the centre. Norwich Cathedral, begun in 1096, has one of the tallest spires in England and a large cloister and close beside the river. On a mound to the west stands the Norman castle keep, and between them the market square fills with stalls. The city is also known for the unusually large number of medieval parish churches that survive.
A Norwich map poster shows the river curling around the eastern edge of the old city and the inner ring road following the line of the walls. Inside it is a dense, irregular street pattern that has barely changed in plan for centuries. Beyond it, Victorian and later suburbs spread outward along the main roads.
