Nova Alvorada do Sul is a young town in Mato Grosso do Sul, in Brazil's Centre-West, on the BR-163 highway south of the state capital, Campo Grande. Like many towns in the region, it was laid out on open land, and the map shows it at once: a regular grid of blocks, wide avenues and right-angled corners, with little of the irregularity of older settlements.
The land around the town is flat to gently rolling and used for cattle and large-scale crops. Sugarcane has become important in the area, supplying mills that make sugar and ethanol. From above, the town's grid sits inside a larger pattern of very large rectangular fields, straight farm roads and strips of native vegetation along the streams.
