Nova Granada is a municipality in the northwest of São Paulo state, in the region around São José do Rio Preto. Like many towns in the interior of the state, it was laid out on a regular grid, and from above its streets form an orderly chequerboard of near-square blocks that ends abruptly where farmland begins.
The surrounding countryside is flat to gently rolling, and beyond the town the map is dominated by long straight roads and the broad geometry of large fields. Small watercourses and lines of trees mark the lower ground between properties. The contrast between the fine urban grid and the wide rural pattern is one of the most characteristic sights of interior São Paulo.
