Nova Viçosa lies on the far southern coast of Bahia, close to the border with Espírito Santo. From above, the town sits beside a river mouth, with its streets arranged in a modest grid between the estuary and the Atlantic. Long, straight beaches run along the coast in both directions.
The land around the town is low and wet, with mangroves along the river channels and sandy ground along the shore. This part of Bahia is known for its coastline and for being within reach of the waters around the Abrolhos archipelago, one of Brazil's notable marine areas.
