Novodvinsk lies on the left bank of the Northern Dvina, a short way upstream of Arkhangelsk in Russia’s far north. The town grew up around a large pulp and paper mill, and industry and housing were planned together, which shows in its orderly street plan and the clear division between factory ground and residential blocks.
The river here is broad and split by islands and side channels on its way to the White Sea. On a map, this watery landscape frames the town on one side, while forest and wetland spread across the other, giving the composition a strong sense of northern space.
